What makes it Green:

The Mission of Greenhill Contracting is to create beautiful living spaces that are healthy for people and have low impact on the environment. In Esopus, New York, are two homes are already up, which fulfill this Mission on a grand scale. (These homes are in the New Paltz Central School District)

A Gold designation is on its way, when the US Green Building Council rating system (LEED®) commissioning process has been completed. (The U.S. Green Building Council has introduced a LEED® for Homes rating system similar to its program for new commercial construction. Like the commercial construction rating system, the LEED® for Homes pilot is based on a four-tiered rating system: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Points are awarded to projects based on their efficient use of resources and consideration of indoor environmental quality.

The Sustainable Building technology applied in these homes, results in zero carbon emissions. It was the goal of Anthony Aebi, the builder, to prove that this would be possible with more than 4000 sq ft of living space, even though this expanse of space, de facto, means disqualification from a Platinum-level LEED designation. But here is the Gold Standard!...and reliance on completely renewable energy means NO ENERGY BILLS. Yes truly! The meter runs backwards or forwards, as appropriate, resulting in even a net credit to the property owner.

Here is the story!
On this landscape of Red Cedar, Pine and Oak woods and wonderful rocky outcrops, clearing is first-of-all kept to a minimum. The site is simply opened up to the sunlight. Culled trees are tenderly retrieved and milled. The Pine floors in the bedrooms and the Cedar highlights in the bathrooms bear witness to this. Trimmed branches and other cleared wood become landscape mulch. All construction debris is meticulously sorted for recycling.

The houses are set to face south, with many state-of-the-art windows maximizing daylight from that direction. The walls rise up block by block as Insulated Concrete Forms are filled and reinforced with integrated steel. The completed, high R-value shell is carefully sealed, against all infiltration, with state-of-the-art, environmentally safe expanding foam.

Electricity is generated by banks of Photo-Voltaic Cells on the roof. Even with Winter's snow, these have kept the meter running backward overall! This DC power goes through inverters to convert it to AC. It is then fed into the Grid. The house draws power from the Grid and net-metering keeps track of the balance. Heating and Cooling both start from a base of 52 degrees by using geothermal energy.

Heat Recovery Ventilation makes certain that vented air, already conditioned by heating or cooling, according to the season, surrenders much of that energy to incoming fresh air in a heat exchanging process. As all air is circulated throughout the house, it is subjected to serious filtration and removal of possible pollutants. Thus the environment in these homes is marvelously suited to people who suffer from allergies.

Owners of homes using Greenhill Construction's Sustainable Building Techniques thus benefit: their Pockets, their Health and their Planet.
