Heating: Homestead and guest house both combust wood at very high temperatures in masonry stoves, used in Europe and Asia for centuries, which produce little pollution from rapid firing and very large thermal mass. Passive solar is abundant with a 60' south face providing pleasing natural light and warmth.
Cooling: Passive cooling compliments of an immense interior thermal mass which consists of 3 floors of strawbale walls and a mega concrete slab (5" concrete and 12" gravel base) which is on the north side attached garage/shop/studio. Just open 2 windows and let the cool breeze flow from the mega slab into the homestead, keeping it cool and comfortable.
Energy Source: Homestead is off grid with its established high quality worry free renewable energy system. It is totally powered by a rugged African Wind Power 3.6 meter windmill, weighing almost 300 pounds on a 100' tall lattice tower. System includes 24 volt battery bank, 2 inverters, and an emergency back-up generator. Water is heated by either a solar hot water heater or one of the masonry stove or wood stove.
Water Source: Private well with pure delicious water requires no water softening, conditioning, or filtration. Water tested for purity. Rain water collection used to water the greenhouse and raised bed garden.
Windows: Windows are vinyl, Low E and argon filled.
