What makes it Green:

The Double Envelope or Thermal Envelope design is essentially composed of a house within a house. Thermal energy is captured from a south-facing solarium and heat is circulated by a natural convection flow loop in the cavity between the two building envelopes and through a sub-floor.

A recirculating air flow path results from the warm (less-dense) air rising in the south-side solarium, and cooler (denser) air falling on the north side to create pressure differentials that automatically move excess solar thermal gain from the south to the north side of the building without forced convection systems. Hence the passive nature of this design. Air flow is proportional to the differences in temperature between the two convection paths.

In the summer, shading devices eliminate all direct solar gain. Vents are opened at the top of the sun space peak of the house to exhaust hot air. Fresh air intake uses ambient temperature Earth to cool and dehumidify replacement air at the base.

In winter, the air in the cavity is buffered by warm ambient-temperature Earth under the floor (which is partially recharged by the natural convection flow loop during each winter day). In the summer, the convective flow is replaced with cooler near-ambient-temperature Earth replacement air, and the warm air exhausts by natural convection.

The energy-saving capabilities of the envelope design are numerous. For one thing, a great deal of solar heat is taken in through the greenhouse, and at least some excess warmth is stored in the crawl space for use during the night or on cloudy days. Consequently, most double envelope houses require minimal backup heat.

Envelope home residents also enjoy pleasantly stable humidity through the winter, since moist greenhouse atmosphere is continually circulated through the air space and can be admitted to the living quarters by cracking a door or window. Furthermore, the constant but gentle and silent circulation of air prevents stagnation and lends a balmy feeling to the interior environment.
