What makes it Green:

This home is run by two kinds of "active" solar panels: Thermal and photovoltaic (PV).
When there is enough sunshine, water is pumped into 4 large panels on the roof. The water heats up very quickly and is pumped into a large storage tank in the garage. From there, it is pumped into radiant slabs to heat the custom slate and maple hardwood floors (if the thermostat calls for heat)and the domestic water heater. When the sun is not shining, the thermal solar system is backed up by a new natural gas water heater..so there is never a disruption of hot water or heated floors. Also, the user can control which rooms in the home are heated and how much they will be heated. Last years TOTAL natural gas bill was $450. The PV System was installed in 2006.

When sunlight hits the PV panels, they produce electricity immediately. It flows into the one of two "inverters". It converts the electricity from DC into AC electricity. Any electricity that is not used goes out of the house into the "grid". Whenever the panels produce more electricity than the house is using, the electrical meter "spins" backwards. When the sun isn't shining, electricity flows from the grid into the house and the meter spins forward. Therefore, there is never a disruption in flow of electricity to the house.
