What makes it Green:
Energy-Saving and Green Features
HOME COMFORT (HEATING AND COOLING)
Bryant 15 SEER Puron® Electric Heat Pump: Saving you energy and money on your annual heating and cooling costs, this heat pump has been installed upstairs to pump out hot air and move in cool air - acting much like a traditional air conditioner. On warm days, the heat pump removes heat from inside your home and replaces it with cool air. On cold days, it removes heat from outside air (still available in cold weather) and moves it indoors, creating a balanced comfort year round.
Bryant furnace, 95% AFUE:
This high efficiency furnace requiring less money to heat your home has been installed for direct heating of your main level and basement. It includes high efficiency filters (MERV 8) to deliver improved air quality with a high level of particulate filtration (most hardware store filters are MERV 2).
Ultimate Air RecoupAerator (two - one for each system above):
Most new homes are now tightly constructed and sealed up to save energy dollars. But sealing up a home allows little fresh air in and prevents stale air from getting out. Without fresh air your home will feel stuffy and can become unhealthy. Odors linger, bacteria and mildew thrive, pollen builds up. The easiest solution is to open a window; however this impacts the energy you are trying to save. This whole-house air filter and ventilator circulates fresh air in approximately every two hours. It captures virtually all pollens and mold spores. It is built with a highly efficient, low noise motor, and EconoCool to allow the system to perform as efficiently as possible.
EconoCool also includes a dehumidistat to monitor humidity levels and adjust the unit's operation to balance indoor humidity, deterring mold growth and creating a comfortable environment.
In the cooler summer evenings, a switch can be engaged to bring the cool air in to your home.
A steady supply of fresh air can have a positive effect on the way you feel and does have a positive impact on maintaining a healthy, energy efficient living environment.
Ceiling fans in all bedrooms, family room and the home gym:
Energy Star® Ceiling fan/light combination units are approximatley 50% more efficient than conventional fan/light units. This can save you $10 per year on utility bills, plus additional air conditioning or heating savings you may gain when your fan is operated properly.
On hot days, use the ceiling fan in the counter-clockwise direction. While standing directly under the ceiling fan you should feel a cool breeze. In the winter, reverse the motor and operate the ceiling fan at low speed in the clockwise direction to force warm air near the ceiling down.
Saving energy prevents pollution.
Environmentally friendly, Energy Star® insulation:
Spray on insulation that stops air infiltration resulting in no mold and no mildew. Extremely high R value, contains no urea formaldehyde (VOC), resists water, has no odor, no off gases and no CFCs.
Mantis fireplace:
28,000 BTU Fireplace that is certified to exceed 93% Efficiency AFUE. The Mantis captures condensed water, a by-product of its clean combustion and efficient heat exchanger, and then evaporates it to introduce humidity into the room. The result is a more comfortable home environment. Correct humidity levels will make a room feel 7 degrees warmer to a body.
Radiant barrier in attic walls and roof:
Radiant barriers in the form of reflective foil have been installed to reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss, which reduces home heating and cooling energy usage and costs. A radiant barrier reflects radiant heat back towards its source, reflecting as much as 97%. Studies have shown that radiant barriers can lower a cooling bill by between 5 and 10 percent when used in warm, sunny climates.
Solar System 5.4 kilowatt photovoltaic, south-facing: Solar dramatically reduces your electric bill, requires no fossil fuels and produces no toxic gases (leading to climate change). According to a study by the Appraisal Institute, solar increased the selling prices of homes by $20.73 for every $1 decrease in annual utility bills.
Your solar system will produce energy throughout the day. During the sunny months, you will likely accrue credits. When needed, your home will draw energy from the grid.
Your SolarCity PowerStation works in parallel with the electric utility grid. SolarCity helps you enter into an agreement with your local utility. Solar panels carry a 25-year manufacturer's warranty. Many last longer than that; some of the first solar power systems installed more than 40 years ago are still going strong.
Tankless water heaters:
Tankless water heaters heat water only as it is used, or on demand. A tankless hot water heater has a heating device that is activated by the flow of water when a hot water valve is opened. Once activated, the heater delivers a constant supply of hot water.
DIRECT HEALTH BENEFITS
FEATURE BENEFIT
Benjamin Moore AURA® and Sherwin Williams low odor low VOC(Volatile Organic Compounds) paints:
High performance interior paint that offers non-yellowing quality, better gloss retention, better fade resistance, low odor, low VOC and meets the most stringent regulations in North America.
Studies have found that levels of several organic compounds (VOCs) average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors.
VOC exposure health effects include eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, loss of coordination, nausea; damage to liver, kidney, and central nervous system. Some organics can cause cancer in animals; some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans.
Cork floors in media room, gym and wine cellar:
Cork does not absorb dust, lowering allergens and reducing asthma irritants in the home. It is resilient to termites, insects, microbes, pressure (quick recovery), and liquids (think wine). Cork is 90% gaseous which makes it a great thermal and acoustic insulator, it is remarkably durable, resists flames and is easy to care for (occasional sweep, vacuum or damp mop).
Cork Oak trees are stripped of their bark (cork) every 9 to 14 years, never cut, ensuring that its habitat remains undisturbed.
Managed forest hardwood floors:
Hardwood does not absorb dust, lowering allergens and reducing asthma irritants in the home.
The wood in these floors is from well-managed forests, and made with formaldehyde-free, low-VOC adhesives.
WATER CONSERVATION
Toto® dual flush toilets:
The dual flush system has two flush button options, a half flush (0.9 gallons per flush) and a full flush (1.6 gallons per flush). It is estimated that these systems can reduce water usage by up to 67% compared with a traditional toilet.
Energy-Saving (Money Saving) Appliances:
Energy Star® appliances Energy Star® qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models.
Helping to protect the environment. If just one in 10 homes use Energy Star® qualified appliances, the change would be like planting 1.7 million new acres of trees.
Energy Star® bath exhaust fans:
Energy Star® qualified bathroom fans feature high performance motors and improved blade design to deliver better performance and a longer life. They use 70% less energy on average, saving $120 in electricity costs over the life of the fan and are significantly quieter than standard models.
Energy Star® light fixtures:
Energy Star® qualified lighting uses about 75% less energy, produce 75 percent less heat, and lasts up to 10 times longer. It also helps preserve energy resources and reduce the risks of global warming.
To save the most energy and money, replace your highest use fixtures (kitchen, family room, porch) or the light bulbs in them with energy-efficient models.
If every American home replaced their 5 most frequently used light fixtures or the bulbs in them with ones that have earned the Energy Star®, we would save close to $8 billion each year in energy costs, and together we would prevent the greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from nearly 10 million cars.
OTHER
Original home was deconstructed:
Deconstruction is an earth-friendly approach to demolition. It means that workers disassemble a structure's components so that the materials can be processed and sold for reuse. Every brick, stick of lumber, or salvaged architectural detail removed from the waste stream saves valuable landfill space and conserves production energy.
Recycled rubber mulch in back yard: A long lasting, economical ground cover that will keep your home and garden looking beautiful and healthy all year. It is guaranteed to retain its rich tones for many years and works like regular mulch, allowing water and nutrients in, while blocking weeds out.
