What makes it Green:
Nestled deep in the wooded sand dunes on a private, secluded lot less than a mile from Lake Michigan and in walking distance of the quaint downtown of Grand Haven, sits a home unlike any other. It is a home built for luxury and for near-zero maintenance. But more than anything else, it is a home created for beautiful, easy comfort. When combined with the unique design and attention detail found most often in the homes and buildings of Europe, you get a house that cannot be found anywhere else. Conceived by retired construction engineer Frans Jungslager, a man who is as precise as he is passionate, the home embodies a sense of durability by design. Along with a well-known architect, Frans designed the house over a period of time while doing extensive research and had it built in 2000 as a retirement home for himself and his wife, creating a space that cultivates a sense of warmth and comfort. Still, European sensibilities are the foundation of the house design and construction and the minimalist mantra that pervades both the structure and the aesthetic sensibility begins with the exterior. The stucco like exterior insulated finishing system is zero maintenance and along with the vinyl clad Pella windows eliminates the need for any exterior painting. The professionally designed landscaping offers a natural setting and no lawn eliminates the need for maintenance. The 30 year warranty on the seamless metal composite, dramatically sloping roof, eliminates the snow accumulation and has no gutters or downspouts to clean or maintain. The snow-melting brick pavers walkway eliminate the need for snow shoveling. People feel drawn to the space and instantly feel comfortable from the first moment they step into the foyer. Guests enter the house through 8 foot high, double custom wood doors that lead into a 19 foot foyer. Large windows showcase the heated floor of brick pavers which match the exterior entry walkway, a brick lighted planter and lighted photo gallery add clean but personal design elements as guest ascend the stairs to the main floor of the home. The living room and dining area opens into a space with a soaring 17 foot foot sloping ceiling. The floor is quarter-sawn maple hardwood with inlaid wool carpeting. The entertainment system consists of 10 Bose speakers and Sony components, built into a flush, concealed TV cabinet. The energy efficient ceramic log fireplace is capable of heating the home and serves as the centerpiece of the entertaining area. It is framed by a granite hearth with a floating seating area; nearby, French doors open to a large deck built into the hill, complete with a natural gas grill and built in seating. The European-style kitchen, designed by a Certified Kitchen Design specialist, is one of the crowning gems of the home. The custom-built cabinetry made by the German Company Leicht has matching fronts for cabinetry and appliances. A wall mounted Gaggenau convection oven and matching microwave enclosure match the stainless steel interior dishwasher, and the Halogen and standard element cook top which is framed in the Corian countertop. The Sub Zero refrigerator and it's remotely located freezer drawers complete the appliances, and the large island with a bar sink has a custom granite top. The washer & dryer are the energy efficient side by side Swedish ASKO front loading units. All lighting is controlled by a multiple scene present lighting system with remote control. It even comes complete with an elevator to allow easy access designed for maximum pampering. The house was recently tested for energy efficiency and received the highest rating possible 5+ stars. In fact the design of the house and the energy efficiency of the equipment enables the house to achieve the 15% better than code goal of the 5 Star Homes Program. This is truly a "one of a kind" house that instill awe in all who walk through this home.
