What makes it Green:
A renovated and updated energy efficient (Energy Star) home using natural materials and state of the art appliances and mechanicals; to include a Jenn-air stainless steel dual fuel (gas and electric) range and convection oven, a Jenn-air wall mounted combination stainless steel microwave and convection oven, stainless steel dishwasher and side by side refrigerator, as well as water heater, and heating and cooling system. This home offers its inhabitants a well designed open floor plan with many custom amenities while creating a sense of peacefulness and union with nature through its many windows, doors, and skylights while experiencing the kaleidoscope of color with the change in seasons. The oak post and beam portion of the home as well as the random length and width custom flooring were fabricated from red and white oak grown on the property.
The home was designed as a passive solar home with its two story 2,520 cubic ft. green house with masonry slate covered flooring and brick heat retention wall. This room creates sufficient heat to limit the use of secondary heating during the late fall and winter particularly on high solar days. The dual fuel (oil and wood) furnace heats the well insulated home very efficiently with a sustainable wood source on the property and the high efficiency 15 seer air conditioner cools the home when needed Infrequently in the summer. The 7 high efficiency ceiling fans ensure adequate dispersion of the heated, cooled, and outside air within the interior living space. There are 2 brick fireplaces with heatalators that further generate heat while also giving that old fashion country charm of a natural wood-burning fireplace. The R value for the exterior walls is 27.45, the R value for the cathederal ceilings is 31.17 and 28.57 depending uopn construction system. The setting of the home within 4.13 wooded acres shelters the home from the loss of heated and cooled air from the harsh winds in the winter and ravages of the sun in the summer. The light which is emanated through the green house and the 31 windows, 7 full or partial view doors, and the 5 skylights not only brings the outdoors in but also provides sufficient light that additional electrical lighting is not needed.
The home is adjacent to Maryland State Park land and municipal water shed land as well as near Federal parkland and Thorpwood Retreat Center. It is within an 1.15 hrs from Washington, DC and Baltimore, Md. and a .5 hr. from Gettysburg Pennsylvania.
